Wild scenes emerge from Bali as island grapples with major fueling crisis

Wild scenes are emerging out of Bali as locals and tourists alike are seen queuing up for hours at various petrol stations as the island grapples with a major fueling crisis.

Viral footage shared to social media reveals the true extent of the fuel shortage across Denpasar and southern Badung, as thousands of motorists are seen waiting in lines that stretch kilometres long – with some even sleeping on roads so they don’t lose their spots.

And while petrol costs as little as 90 Australian cents per liter, motorists are facing long waits as supplies of fuel products Pertalite and – at some locations – Pertamax become increasingly difficult to find.

Disruptions reportedly began on October 12 across Denpasar, Badung and petrol stations near I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, with traffic congestion along Tuban Road leading towards the airport.

Pertamina President Director Simon Aloysius Mantiri apologised to the public and said one of the disruptions was caused by a technical problem involving the anchor of a fuel tanker.

The issue delayed the vessel’s berthing and unloading process on October 12 until around 10 p.m., according to The Bali Times.

However, Yahoo reported that fuel tankers are scheduled to arrive at the island every other day this week to top up petrol and diesel supplies.

Pertamina has since accelerated deliveries and extended operating hours at selected filling stations. In Denpasar and Badung, stations have been instructed to operate 24 hours, with similar arrangements also planned in Tabanan and Gianyar to help ease queues, as per The Bali Times.

The company has also asked station operators to provide clearer information on fuel availability and operating hours while distribution continues to recover.

Meanwhile, some motorists have even been forced to push their vehicles after running out of fuel.

Many have taken to Instagram to show off insanely long lines and give fellow motorists an update on the situation.

“Some petrol stations may temporarily run out of certain fuel types,” one travel blogger warned.

“You might experience longer waiting times when filling up your scooter or car.

“Please avoid panic buying so everyone can get the fuel they need.

“This doesn’t mean you need to cancel your plans or worry about travelling to Bali. Just be aware of the situation and allow a little extra time if needed.”

She also warned tourists to arrange transfer pick-ups in advance and allow extra travel time in case your driver needs to refuel.
