Deadly encounter on top of the Brooklyn Bridge as cop faces off with knife-wielding man
In Episode 4 of Behind the Bodycam, Retired NYPD Detective Lieutenant Ralph Cilento breaks down dramatic NYPD bodycam and drone footage from a deadly standoff high above the Brooklyn Bridge. Police encountered 41-year-old Chaun Bottom walking along the bridge cables while armed with a knife, claiming he had a bomb and telling officers he wanted to die. Members of the NYPD Emergency Service Unit climbed onto the span and spent nearly an hour trying to talk him down before Bottom raised the knife and advanced toward an officer, bringing the tense negotiation to a sudden and fatal conclusion.
Ralph analyzes the extraordinary de-escalation effort, from Detective Nicholas Giordani slowly building rapport and respecting Bottom’s space to the tactical challenges of operating on the bridge while officers are secured by safety harnesses hundreds of feet above the East River. He then breaks down the final moments captured from multiple angles, including Bottom’s approach with the knife raised and the single shot fired by Sgt. Dennis Dooley from the roadway below. It’s a close look at crisis negotiation, NYPD ESU tactics and the split-second use-of-force decision that followed nearly an hour of officers trying to bring the encounter to a peaceful end.
