Moment shootout sparks between cops and gunman holding hostages in California assisted living facility

A terrifying hostage standoff inside a California assisted living facility erupted in a hail of gunfire as newly released video captured officers pleading with an armed man to surrender before shots rang out.

The dramatic footage shows the chaotic final moments of a July 24 confrontation in the Bay Area’s Fremont that left 62-year-old Edward Francis Oliver dead after he allegedly barricaded himself inside a room with two hostages.

The heart-pounding ordeal unfolded around 3:30 p.m. at an Aegis Living facility on the 3800 block of Walnut Avenue, where police rushed to reports of a man holding two people captive.

Bodycam video and witness footage released by Fremont police shows officers scrambling to defuse the volatile situation as Oliver allegedly threatened one of the hostages with what appeared to be a handgun.

“We need you to communicate, can you please put the gun down? I do not want to shoot you. Do you hear me?” an officer can be heard pleading in the footage.

But the desperate attempts to talk Oliver down appeared to go nowhere. “Dude, let’s talk about this. You’re going to get shot,” the officer warned.

Moments later, the situation took an even more chilling turn.

“Dude, put the gun down! He’s got a gun pointing straight at her!” the officer shouted, apparently referring to one of the hostages.

The officer repeatedly screamed for Oliver to drop the weapon before unleashing multiple shots. The sudden barrage of gunfire sent screams echoing through the facility as officers sprang into action.

“Push in, push in! Go, go, go!” officers shouted as they rushed toward the room.

More gunshots could be heard as the frantic operation continued.

“Inside, inside!” another officer yelled.

The footage then shows officers dragging a person out of the room amid the chaos. Investigators said Oliver was pointing what appeared to be a firearm at one of the victims before turning the weapon toward responding officers, according to ABC7.

But the weapon turned out to be an airsoft gun.

Once inside the room, officers secured the scene and immediately began administering medical aid to the wounded suspect. Oliver was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Miraculously, both hostages escaped the violent confrontation without injuries, authorities said.

Police said a family member of the hostages had helped provide critical information to responding officers as the tense situation unfolded.

Aegis Living told the outlet that the frightening confrontation stemmed from a family dispute, although the company did not elaborate on what sparked the alleged hostage situation.

Authorities have not disclosed additional details about the relationship between Oliver and the two hostages.

The circumstances surrounding the fatal police shooting remain under investigation.
