How ‘Peanut Punch madness’ has running backs spooked, coaches flummoxed and fumbles flooding the NFL
Maybe it’s time for the NFL to change its logo to include a player’s hand punching at the football that sits atop the shield.
That adaptation would appropriately represent the way that defense is being played in 2026, and the risk offenses face if the ball is not carried in a secure high-and-tight position.
“It’s ‘Punch-out Madness’ in the NFL right now,” Giants head coach John Harbaugh said. “Even when the defensive players carry the ball, the offensive guys are punching balls out now. That’s madness. So, it’s just become a new part of the game because turnovers determine the outcomes of games. It has to be the No. 1 priority thing.”
The league saw 235 fumbles across the first six weeks, which represents a 28 percent increase over last season, according to Elias Stats Bureau. It is the most ever at this point in a season since 2022 (257).
