Texas A&M vs. Alabama prediction, picks, odds: Defenses take center stage in SEC clash

Alabama’s two-game losing streak has done two things: It has put the Crimson Tide’s College Football Playoff hopes on the ropes, and it has turned the heat back up on head coach Kalen DeBoer.

Whether it’s fair that DeBoer is under such scrutiny after a three-point loss to Georgia and a defeat on the road at Tennessee is up for debate, but that’s life in the big city.

DeBoer and the Crimson Tide are 13.5-point favorites in a must-win game against Texas A&M on Saturday.

Texas A&M vs. Alabama odds, prediction

Mike Elko is coming off a trip to the College Football Playoff, so he isn’t under the same amount of heat as DeBoer, but the Texas A&M head coach can ill-afford another blowout loss if he wants his job in College Station to feel secure.

Texas A&M has three losses, all to SEC teams, and they’ve come by an average of 20 points.

The Aggies are dealing with a host of problems, but the real issue seems to be that their offense can’t do damage against good defenses.

LSU and Missouri each held Texas A&M to six points. Alabama’s defense grades out below both of those units, but the Tide are still formidable without the ball.

There are some question marks about Alabama with the ball, however.

After some spellbinding performances early in the season, Keelon Russell and the Tide have slowed down considerably of late.

Alabama scored just 17 points and averaged 5.8 yards per play against Georgia, which is not a worrying output against the Bulldogs, but they took a significant step back against Tennessee, averaging just 3.8 yards per play in a 26-10 defeat.

Elko and Texas A&M had a cakewalk against Citadel in Week 7, so I expect we’ll get the best version of the Aggies’ defense Saturday.

That said, I don’t suspect the offense will be able to do enough damage to justify this total.

The Play: Under 50.5 points (-110, DraftKings)
