Katie Zacharia reveals lesson her brief White House stint taught her kids as she recounts final day

Ousted White House press secretary Katie Zacharia says her whirlwind, five-day tenure in the Trump administration provided an invaluable life lesson for her four young children, declaring she would rather weather global ridicule than sacrifice loyalty.

Speaking from the patio of her Thousand Oaks residence Monday, the conservative commentator recounted the final hours of her historic, short-lived appointment, which ended abruptly on October 16.

Zacharia revealed that her final evening in the role coincided with the day after her eldest son’s birthday, culminating in a dinner with Vice President JD Vance.

“It was a tough night,” Zacharia told the California Post.

“What I will mark is that maintaining your character, no matter the circumstances, for me, is what defined the entire process. That to tell my kids: be loyal, be faithful, and be true to who you are, even when the whole world turns against you,” she continued.

Zacharia’s sole appearance at the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room podium on October 13 sparked intense backlash and viral mockery online. Yet she insisted the public fallout was worth enduring to set an example for her family.

“What they witnessed was a mother standing strong while she’s an international meme, or when everyone’s making fun of her, including people who we thought would be on our side,” she told The Post. “If… I went through that entire thing only to teach my kids to have integrity and to have loyalty, then I think it was worth it.”

Her sudden departure also triggered security worries at home.

Zacharia said stalkers and onlookers descended on her Southern California neighborhood in the immediate aftermath, prompting neighbors to intervene and run people off.

Defending her rocky press room performance, Zacharia claimed she was given “only a few hours of actual briefing material” on the morning of her first press conference. She said former press secretaries, including Kayleigh McEnany, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Ari Fleischer, and Sean Spicer, reached out to express sympathy over what she called an inadequate “runway” to prepare.

She also detailed her experience in a piece for the California Post’s opinion page.

Rejecting suggestions she had been selected via internal favors, Zacharia maintained that President Donald Trump recruited her directly following years of hard-fought television hits and early-morning cable spots.

When asked about her departure, she recalled Trump telling her: “You know, there are other ways to make a living.”

Zacharia teased that new career announcements are imminent, vowing to remain an outspoken Trump ally from outside the executive branch.
