New York is the most haunted state in the country — and these are the best NYC spots to catch a ghost

New York’s got spirit.

The Empire State is officially the most haunted in the nation — and has some of the most famous ghosts and ghouls spending eternity within state lines, a new survey found.

New York has logged 160,198 reported ghost sightings over the past century — meaning 81 in every 10,000 people have encountered a spirit, Casino.ca found.

That puts New York far ahead of the second and third place states, Texas and Louisiana, which have a respective 77 and 74 ghost sightings for every 10,000 people, according to the site.

And New York has some of the most famous eternal residents, with founding fathers and rockstars still roaming their old haunts.

Here are some of the most haunted spots in the Big Apple.

Morris-Jumel Mansion

The Washington Heights mansion is “loaded” with spirits that never crossed to the other side — including Vice President Arron Burr and his wife, Eliza Jumel, according to Angela Artuso, Director of the Gotham Paranormal Research Society.

“The mansion itself is known for disembodied voices, apparitions, some screams, some giggles from women that were not seen,” said Artuso, whose team has investigated the home numerous times.

“In Burr’s bedroom, we got this horrible-sounding disembodied voice when we were setting up our video camera. I have no idea what it said, but it screamed across the opening part of our video when we hit record.”

Jumel, whose divorce from Burr was finalized on the day he died, is said to linger on the balcony, while a Hessian soldier who fell down the home’s stairs and onto his bayonet is believed to haunt the halls.

But today, Manhattan’s oldest surviving residence might be best known as the place where Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote his blockbuster musical, “Hamilton.”

Fraunces Tavern

The famous tavern where George Washington celebrated the Revolutionary War victory is teeming with spirits — both joyous and sorrowful.

Fraunces Tavern barflies have reported a woman lurking in the halls, an apparition said to be the spirit of Anna Gardie, a French Saint-Domingue-born dancer who was considered one of the first ballet stars in America.

She and her husband were living in the boarding house above the bar in 1798 when he killed her in a disturbing murder-suicide after she refused to return with him to his native France.

But there are also disembodied sounds of partying and chatter that are clearly not from the iPhone-era, according to Artuso.

“When we did our investigations, we kept getting this strange male voice come through in the long room — where George Washington had a farewell dinner for his troops — saying, ‘Hey ladies, ladies. And back then, no ladies were allowed in there,” Artuso said, recalling when a female-only crew of investigators probed the bar.

“That was pretty wild. It was almost like we were getting yelled at for being present in a place we shouldn’t have been.”

Chelsea Hotel

The infamous Chelsea Hotel is widely considered one of the most haunted landmarks in Manhattan.

Dozens of people have died within its walls over the years, including many high-profile and disturbing cases.

Artuso and her team have not officially investigated the Chelsea, but the paranormal researcher conducted her own “mini investigation” where she could “feel the heaviness” of the spiritual center.

“Their basement facility area is supposedly very heavy with apparitions and disembodied voices reported by the staff, and a lot of the staff are even leery about going downstairs,” she said.

Guests have claimed to see Nancy Spungen haunting the hotel — decades after she was stabbed to death by Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious in Room 100.

The ghost of Etelka Graf is also said to be spending eternity at the hotel — she severed her left hand before leaping to her death from the fifth-floor window.

The elevator is also known to stop at the check-in desk on the first floor with nobody in it.

“Many people at the hotel constantly say they see apparitions, they hear singing, they hear people sobbing, people crying,” said Artuso.

“Those spirits still linger.”
