Where to Watch ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ in Honor of Patrick Stewart, Dead at 86

Patrick Stewart has passed away at the age of 86. Over the years, the beloved British actor had become best known for playing Professor Charles Xavier, the iconic leader of the X-Men in many, many films (including this December’s Avengers: Doomsday), but I first met him as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Over the years, Picard became more than just a fictional character onscreen. He was an emblem of courage and honor, even a father figure for yours truly.

Jean-Luc Picard was created as a fascinating foil to his franchise predecessor, Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner). Where Kirk was emotionally open, passionate, and adventurous (almost to a fault), Picard initially seemed stern and demanding. Propelled by his ambition to leave his family’s idyllic French vineyard behind for the stars, Picard pushed himself to the role of Captain of the starship Enterprise. There, he was not only a brilliant strategic leader, but a surprisingly tender one. He was incredibly loyal to his talented crew, going so far as to brilliantly argue on behalf of android Data’s humanity in the classic Season 2 episode, “Measure of a Man.”

As the series developed, Stewart used his background as a theater actor and alumnus of the Royal Shakespeare Company to transform storylines that other performers might turn into camp into utterly devastating emotional arcs: the time when the Borg kidnapped him and turned him into “Locutus,” as well as the harrowing aftermath where he was haunted by PTSD of his time being part of the villainous hive mind alien race; the frequent holodeck-centric episodes that dressed the cast in period garb for genre-bending fun; his off-and-on decades-long flirtation with former Academy flame, Dr. Crusher (Gate McFadden); and, of course, his ongoing relationship with the superpowered being known simply as “Q” (John de Lancie).

Star Trek: The Next Generation is a beloved classic because Patrick Stewart’s incredibly layered performance led the way for the rest of the cast to explore the far corners of the universe. Whether you want to watch the science fiction series for the first time or simply want to revisit your favorite TNG arcs in memory of the late, great Patrick Stewart, we’ve got you.
