West Coast favorite ice cream chain expands empire with new Bay Area location
Popular Portland-based ice cream chain Salt & Straw announced its expansion with new shop opening in the Bay Area next month.
The sweets shop will open its first Oakland outlet in the Rockridge neighborhood on November 13, KRON4 News reported.
Pictures posted on social media show red and white window decals on the building at 6300 College Avenue, where the new shop will open next an existing Safeway.
Cousins Kim and Tyler Malek launched Salt & Straw 2011with nothing but a push cart in Portland’s Alberta Arts District, according to the company’s website.
Since then, they’ve opened more than 50 locations across the country, with a heavy concentration on the West Coast.
“We take cream from fifth-generation, family-owned Scott Brothers Dairy. Cows who are blissed-out, grass-fed, and never given growth hormones or antibiotics,” a message on the website reads.
The pair said they offer customers a unique ice cream seeking the “most intriguing angle” and ingredients to their blends.
Some of those include habanero goat cheese, wild nettles from Washington and almond brittle.
Customers at the Oakland shop can choose from flavors like Maple Koginut Squash with Pomegranate, Turkey and Bacon Caramel, and Pumpkin Pie with Almond Croissant Streusel.
Fans can get their hands on a whole lot more than scoops at the shop, including ice cream cakes and Tacolates — waffle cone taco shells with flavors like Strawberry Pretzel Cheesecake or a Chocolate Taco stuffed with Cinnamon-ancho ice cream.
The Rockridge shop joins a list of 10 other locations in Northern California, including eight in the Bay Area, one in Sacramento and another in Roseville.
Salt & Straw also has 11 shops in Los Angeles, two in Orange County and three in San Diego.
