Election officials spot error on ballots for major California school district

An error has been identified affecting some ballots, according to the Fresno County Elections Department.

The issue occurs when voters use an electronic ballot-marking machine at a vote center. It affects the Fresno Unified School District trustee race in particular.

Voters for the Fresno Unified School District race will still be able to make their selections, but when the machine prints their marked ballots, it will incorrectly identify the race as belonging to the Fowler Unified School District.

Votes cast in the Fresno Unified School District Trustee race will still be recorded for that contest, and all other races will remain unaffected.

To alert voters to the issue, election officials will place notices on ballot-marking devices at every Vote Center. Those who prefer not to use the machines can instead ask for a ballot printed on-site.

The error does not appear on mail-in ballots or ballots printed on demand.

Kus apologized for the mistake and urged anyone seeking clarification to reach out to the Fresno County Elections Department.

Meanwhile, across the state, acting US attorney Bill Essayli and Attorney General Todd Blanche have been leading the Justice Department’s effort to require California election officials to set aside disputed ballots of up to 20,000 people and verify voters’ citizenship before counting their votes.

“Every minute that goes by, American citizen votes are being diluted in the state of California,” Essayli said last week. “It’s an emergency, and we expect the courts to treat it as such.”

On Wednesday, however, a federal judge rejected the Trump administration’s original request to stop California from processing the likely 20,000 ballots, warning it would “wreak havoc” on the midterm elections.

Federal law prohibits noncitizens from voting in federal elections, and the government says some people have already been criminally charged over alleged illegal registration and voting.

As the court battle played out, Essayli previously told the California Post he feared that this could be affecting the polls in LA County as well.

“If you look at California’s own papers, they said they’ve already processed over 300,000 ballots just for LA County,” he said Saturday. “So this is going on as we speak.”
