Stevens’ brave endorsement switch: Letters to the Editor — Nov. 3, 2026

The Issue: Michigan Rep. Haley Stevens dropping her Abdul El-Sayed endorsement after their falling out.

Rep. Haley Stevens deserves great respect for breaking ranks and endorsing Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers (“ ’Nuff Sayed!” Nov. 2)

Loyalty to a party is not a substitute for principle. When former KKK leader David Duke was nearly elected in Louisiana’s 1991 gubernatorial race, President George H.W. Bush backed a Democrat over a fellow Republican.

A party can survive losing an election. A healthy democracy requires people willing to lose one, too.

When El-Sayed defeated Stevens in the primary, she graciously conceded defeat and urged her supporters to unite behind him. How has he repaid her?

When Stevens raised concerns about comments she considered hurtful to Jewish Americans, El-Sayed dismissed it as her “relitigating a primary that ended three months ago.”

So much for unity. He has failed to show even basic respect to Stevens.

If Michiganders fail to elect a Democrat to fill retiring Gary Peter’s seat in the Senate, look no further than Stevens.

I can’t understand why she is so bitter. Disappointed, yes, but she has turned outright ugly.

She was as divisive a candidate as her opponent, El-Sayed. She was financed by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in return for her promise to support an Israeli government that has killed more than 70,000 Palestinians in Gaza.

Democrats have bent over backward to accommodate antisemitic candidates in their big tent. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer even attacked Stevens for reversing her support of El-Sayed because of his antisemitism.

At least she displayed courage and moral clarity — unlike Schumer, who’s a Jew himself. He is a disgrace to the people he professes to protect.

The other apologists for these antisemites are not much better.

While Haley Stevens went against her party and did not endorse El-Sayed, instead endorsing the Republican nominee, Chuck Schumer betrayed the Jewish community by endorsing the antisemite.

I am not surprised; Schumer is a disgrace.

Leave your Trump Derangement Syndrome at home and vote for Rogers, who will stand up for all Michiganders.

Many Democrats, like Rep. Stevens, have already turned on El-Sayed. Bravo to them!

The Issue: Barack Obama condemning the Trump administration’s Rep. Ilhan Omar investigation.

No one knows who the hell Ilhan Omar really is (“Selective ‘outrage,’ ” Editorial, Oct. 30).

One thing is for sure, though: She’s a liar. How many people has she married?

Now, out of nowhere, we have one of the worst presidents in our country’s history blabbing about the Trump administration’s investigation. I guess Barack Obama forgot about his buddy Joe Biden having the FBI raid President Trump’s home.

Omar should be deported back to Somalia. We’ll see how much she can steal from that government.

Ironically, Obama’s selective outrage over the Omar investigation didn’t include his own administration’s first investigation of her marriage.

Obama should welcome the findings of this investigation. It might give Omar the opportunity to return to Somalia, the country she loves so much (surely not America).
