Spanish soccer player Jesus de Miguel dies after collision with goalie — police open manslaughter investigation

A Spanish soccer club is mourning the death of one of its players after an on-field collision during a match on Monday.

CD Tenerife announced Tuesday morning that forward Jesús de Miguel had tragically died at age 30 after he suffered a cardiac arrest during Monday’s match against FC Andorra, following a violent tackle by goalkeeper Jesús Owono while the two were challenging for a loose ball.

Spanish police have opened an investigation into the incident for possible involuntary manslaughter and prosecutors will be involved in the inquiry.

Reuters noted that judicial authorities in the Canary Islands said that the inquiry was routine procedure since any non-natural death under Spanish law automatically sets off an investigation.

De Miguel had been taken to a hospital and was admitted to the intensive care unit before the club confirmed his death.

“Broken with pain, with a lump in our throat and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we announce the tragic passing of Jesús de Miguel Alameda this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 a.m.,” Tenerife said in a statement.

“There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can ease this profound sense of sadness. We stand with his devastated family, with his loved ones, and with the entire Tenerife football community, who today mourn this cruel turn of events.

“The family of Jesús de Miguel would like to thank everyone for their expressions of support and, from the bottom of their hearts, ask that their privacy be respected at this terrible time.”

The incident happened in the seventh minute of stoppage time in the LaLiga 2 match — Spain’s second division of professional soccer — when De Miguel and Owono crashed into one another as they tried to play the ball near midfield after Owono came way out of his net.

De Miguel appeared to be in immediate trouble after the play as he lay sprawled out on the ground while an FC Andorra player frantically waived over for medical help for him.

Medical staff rushed over to De Miguel and he was taken to the hospital by ambulance after being treated on the pitch for several minutes.

Owono was given a red card for the play.

Owono has deactivated his Instagram account following the incident after he received abuse on social media, Reuters also reported.

All matches that had been scheduled for Tuesday were postponed by the Spanish Football Federation and clubs across the Spanish soccer sphere paid tribute to De Miguel in statements.

“I am deeply saddened by the death of Jesús de Miguel Alameda, a player for CD Tenerife. Today, we all share the terrible pain of an irreparable loss,” LaLiga president Javier Tebas said in a statement. “My deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, teammates and the whole club. All my love and support during this very difficult time. May he rest in peace.”

FC Andorra sent their condolences in a statement, “With heavy hearts and devastated.”

“I’m sorry with all my heart. Rest in peace Jesus,” Andorra President Gerard Pique wrote in a post on social media.

De Miguel had come up through the youth system at Leganes and played for Inter de Madrid, Fuenlabrada, Union Adarve and Navalcarnero in the lower divisions of Spanish soccer.

He helped Castellon secure promotion to the second division during the 2023-24 season when he scored 16 goals, and he joined Tenerife in the summer of 2025, helping them reach LaLiga 2 last season.
