How Thomas Markle’s child porn scandal could impact Prince Harry, Meghan’s fight for UK security

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s UK security situation could be impacted amid her estranged father Thomas Markle Sr.’s child pornography investigation.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been pushing RAVEC — the UK committee responsible for royal security arrangements — to grant them armed police protection while living in Britain, but a source exclusively told Page Six that their security would only be upgraded if a credible threat to their family emerged.

“The question would be, will someone target Meghan Markle because her father is being accused of being a pedophile?” Simon Morgan, former Met Police Bodyguard to the British Royal Family, said.

The founder of Trojan Consultancy explained that RAVEC would assess several potential threats to determine whether the Sussexes require additional security.

“Certainly, RAVEC would only look at it if its intelligence led, what is the chatter on social media, what is the dark web saying in relation to this particular allegation, has there been an increase in negative correspondence to the Sussexes and how is this being perceived amongst the public,” he explained.

From there, they would consider whether those factors could prompt someone to take action against the Sussexes.

“Does this change the threat and risk picture to the Sussexes? You cannot discount it, but are there credible threats rising from the publicity in relation to this allegation, are the Sussexes lives at risk of harm? That’s the way this will be approached,” he said.

While King Charles, senior royals, the prime minister and former prime ministers receive armed protection because of their positions, Morgan explained that RAVEC evaluates the Sussexes’ security needs on a case-by-case basis, relying heavily on intelligence to determine the level of risk and the measures needed to mitigate potential threats.

“You have to establish the risk of it happening — what does the threat look like and does it require some form of action,” he said. “That’s the way it would be approached.”

Harry and the As Ever founder have been petitioning to regain taxpayer-funded police protection in the UK after losing their automatic security arrangements when they resigned from their royal duties and moved to California in 2020.

The “Spare” author argued that the lack of armed protection puts his family at risk and makes it difficult for them to safely visit Britain with their two kids: Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5.

Harry lost his legal appeal in May 2025 after a court upheld the government’s decision to assess his protection on a case-by-case basis for each of his visits across the pond.

When they moved back to the UK in August after living abroad for six years, the couple renewed their push for armed police protection, prompting the security committee RAVEC to launch fresh risk assessments for their family.

Following a relatively calm return to England, Meghan and Harry were pulled back into the headlines last month after her dad was accused of possessing a trove of child pornography.

Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., claimed he found the disturbing images and videos in their dad’s belongings at his home in the Philippines. Local authorities confirmed that Thomas Sr. is now being investigated.

Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan’s half-brother, claimed he found child sexual abuse images and videos in their father’s belongings at his home in the Philippines. Thomas Sr. is now being investigated by local authorities.

Thomas Sr. denied the claims, calling them “sick lies,” while Meghan released a statement admitting that she had known about the “deeply distressing” accusations for years.

“I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children was for one reason: to protect them,” Markle, who has been estranged from her dad since 2018, said in part. “I trusted that the authorities were doing the same for other families.”

On Monday night, Philippine authorities issued an update into their investigation in a first official press conference.

Local police said they are actively working with law enforcement in the United States — but have not been in communication with authorities in the UK.

“The investigation is going in the right direction,” Pmgen Wilson Casueta, the Acting Director of the Philippine National Police, told reporters Tuesday.

“If there is sufficient evidence, [then] we will file a case.”
