‘North of North’ Exclusive Clip: Bruce McCulloch’s Military Mitch Has A Lesson For Siaja

In this exclusive clip from Season 2 of North of North, Siaja (Anna Lambe) gets acquainted with Military Mitch ( Bruce McCulloch), the community center’s new first-aid instructor. With her housing situation in mind, the single mom has more than a few reasons for wanting to make a good impression.

Set in the fictional community of Ice Cove, Nunavut, North of North follows Siaja, a 26-year-old Inuk mother determined to build a better life for herself and her daughter, Bun (Keira Belle Cooper). After very publicly parting ways with her ex-husband, Ting (Kelly William), Siaja has been navigating life as a single woman in a tight-knit community where everybody knows everybody’s business. She also pursued a brief romance with Kuuk (Braeden Clarke) in Season 1, though that relationship was interrupted by the arrival of his sort-of girlfriend.

Mitch, played by Bruce McCulloch of the Canadian comedy troupe Kids in the Hall, kicks off the first-aid class by introducing one “golden” rule: “You first, then them.”

He explains that the familiar airplane safety advice about putting on your own oxygen mask before helping others was actually his idea. Unfortunately, he claims, the airlines stole it from him. So much for getting credit where credit is due!

Between his head-to-toe camouflage outfit and off-kilter airline rant, Mitch is already making it clear that his training sessions won’t be your typical first-aid classes.

Siaja, however, is particularly taken with Mitch’s philosophy. He appears to be busy eyeballing Siaja’s boss, Helen (Mary Lynn Rajskub), when Siaja approaches and introduces herself as a “single mom, first-aid nerd” who appreciates his me-first mentality.

“My mom, who I live with actually – tough situation – she swears by the model but I never got it until you explained it,” she tells him.

“Well, I guess it’s all about the delivery,” Mitch replies.

Mitch seems receptive to the conversation, but his next question takes things in a different (and slightly offensive) direction. He asks Siaja how to say “bugs” in Inuktut, and after she teaches him the word “kumaks,” he immediately puts it to use with the group: “Okay, you kumaks, it’s time to tie some tourniquets like your life depended on it. It may!”

Will Siaja’s new connection help her get one step closer to finding a place of her own? And what’s going on with Mitch and Helen? Watch all eight episodes of North of North Season 2 when the series premieres November 5 on Netflix.
