Mike Johnson won’t run for minority leader after Republicans lose House majority
WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson told his staff Wednesday that he will not vie to be minority leader in the next session of Congress after Republicans suffered a generational midterm wipeout, multiple sources on his team told The Post.
Johnson (R-La.), who jolted to power in October 2023 after GOP infighting led to former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s demise, had governed one of the slimmest majorities in the lower chamber’s history.
During the run-up to the Tuesday elections, Johnson incessantly conveyed optimism about Republicans’ chances of defying history and holding onto the House.
Instead, Democrats appear poised to clinch one of the largest majorities in the House since former President Barack Obama’s rise to power.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) is now expected to run for the leadership role.
Johnson is currently expected to remain in Congress despite stepping down from leadership, a source said.
