Already Missing Julia Stiles on ‘Dancing With the Stars’? Here’s Where to Watch Her Best Films
Some actors show mixed feelings about their kid-star or teen-idol pasts, but Julia Stiles hasn’t been shy about embracing her teen-movie heritage, particularly as it relates to her Shakespeare-inspired rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You and her surprise hit Save the Last Dance (which turned 25 this year!). She paid tribute to the latter by competing this season on Dancing with the Stars, referencing her audition routine from that movie— and paying tribute to her late 10 Things co-star Heath Ledger. Supposedly she was coaxed back to the dance floor following her sweetly silly appearance on a Saturday Night Live Weekend Update bit alongside certified millennial Chloe Fineman. (Her certification program was doing a whole Weekend Update bit about Save the Last Dance.)
Unfortunately, the ride couldn’t last forever, and Stiles has been eliminated from the reality competition program. More fortunately for anyone who’s been left craving more from this not-always-prolific performer, most of the best Julia Stiles movies are available on various streaming services right now (in addition to paid rentals if you don’t have this or that subscription). In celebration of her Dancing with the Stars run, here are six Julia Stiles movies you really must see if you haven’t — whether you’re a fan of her reality-show hoofing or not. (And no, we’re not including Save the Last Dance; presumably you already know about that one!)

When Silver Linings Playbook became an awards-season hit in 2012, Julia Stiles hadn’t been in a movie in three years, and hadn’t been in a wide-release feature for five, which was when she helped wrap up the Bourne trilogy. (Now the idea of a well-known actor taking an extended break is almost enticing, given how many people seem to release multiple projects per year.) It wasn’t exactly a showy return; she doesn’t have a huge part in the bustling ensemble, and that David O. Russell style means that it might be hard to hear her over the din even if she did. Some performers might have even balked at the opportunity to play big sister to a hot new ingenue, as she does playing the older sister of Jennifer Lawrence’s young window Tiffany Maxwell. But with Silver Linings, Stiles gets to act in the kind of talent-stacked comedy-drama that makes everyone look good, and indeed, she’s extremely believable and effective in her small role. (Weirdly, another well-liked performer who hadn’t been in a big movie since capping a trilogy in 2007 popped back up in this one: Rush Hour star Chris Tucker!)

O (2001)

Stiles was known for her flurry of Shakespeare adaptations around the turn of the century; while the loosest and funniest one became her signature role, her most serious ones like Hamlet and O garnered strong reviews with far smaller audiences. O was particularly ignored after a lengthy delay in the wake of the Columbine tragedy; Hollywood got very nervous about depictions of high school violence. But that’s just what makes O a lot nervier than your average Teen Shakespeare, courtesy of actor-turned-director Tim Blake Nelson. Stiles plays the Desdemona role, and now that she’s well into middle age, wouldn’t it be fun to see her take on Lady Macbeth or something?

Back in 2001, Stiles was mostly still doing youth movies and/or Shakespeare. But she took a crack at a very different playwright with State and Main, a film from David Mamet about Hollywood types descending on a small town. It’s got all of the neo-screwball patter Aaron Sorkin wishes he could lay out this effortlessly, and it’s so much fun to see Stiles, whose whole deal was her precocious tone and crisply serious diction, play with Mamet-level dialogue. One of her best line readings is a simple one: When a condescending actor (Alec Baldwin) asks her teenager if she should be in school, she succinctly replies “it’s night.”

As her teen-queen reign receded, Julia Stiles appearing in The Bourne Identity felt like a special guest appearance, injecting some youth appeal into this very Dad Movie spy story about amnesiac assassin Jason Bourne (Matt Damon). Stiles, true to her hacking roots from the TV show Ghost Writer, plays a government techie. She figures more heavily into the sequels, particularly The Bourne Ultimatum; that’s the best one for the Stiles factor, but of course it doesn’t make much sense on its own. But unless you’re a completist, maybe steer clear of Jason Bourne, which kind of sucks in general and unceremoniously fridges her character.

Orphan fans were already aware of Isabelle Fuhrman’s tour-de-force performance as a murderous woman with proportional dwarfism who disguises herself as a little orphan girl. But we weren’t necessarily prepared for the blowout of delightful performances on tap for the prequel, where Fuhrman, who once played Li’l Orphan Esther as a child, uses a combination of camera tricks and pure acting to play a younger Esther when she herself is many years older — and she gets to square off with Julia Stiles, who plays the latest (or rather, earlier) unsuspecting parent to take in this homicidal scamp. Stiles has a bit of horror experience from the 2006 Omen remake, but she’s truly unleashed in this far superior (and much funnier) shocker.

10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU, (aka TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU), Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, 1999 Photo: Everett Collection Streaming Service: Disney+/Hulu
What Stiles list is complete without her tearfully reading a medium-bad poem about how much she loves her sensitive-bad-boy suitor played by Heath Ledger?! Among the teen-movie bumper crop of 1999, 10 Things I Hate About You felt a bit like a turbo-charged sitcom at the time, complete with TV vet Gil Junger at the helm. But it’s one of those movies enhanced by its retroactive period-movie status, to say nothing of Ledger no longer being with us. He sets off a major charisma bomb here, but Stiles holds her own as the prickly, Bell Jar-reading, Bikini Kill-listening Kat. (She’s a role model for us all, even if she must be reading a large-print and heavily annotated version of The Bell Jar for the tome to be that visibly hefty.) No wonder studios stuck Stiles in a bunch of inferior rom-coms after this one; in 10 Things I Hate About You, she makes the whole thing look easy.
