Hundreds of desperate Angelenos swarm LA hotel after fake promise of free housing goes viral
Desperate Angelenos looking for a free place to live were left out in the cold Thursday after viral social media posts hyped a hotel event as a chance to score an apartment — only to find empty promises.
Hundreds of people flocked to the Mayfair Hotel in downtown LA, hoping to land free housing, only to discover the event was never open to the general public.
The housing opportunity was actually limited to about 300 people who had already enrolled in a Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority program and were accompanied by their assigned case managers, according to a FOX 11 reporter at the scene.
But that crucial detail got lost in the social media frenzy.
One social media account shared a flyer from the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority and advertised that “Attendees will have the opportunity to view available units, submit housing applications, and potentially GET APPROVED ON THE SPOT!”
Another account repeated the same pitch, highlighting the possibility of getting approved immediately.
While the posts mentioned that participants needed to be enrolled in LAHSA’s Housing Navigation program, which connects homeless people with housing services, they failed to make clear that attendees had to be pre-enrolled and show up with a case manager.
Instead, the emphasis on getting “APPROVED ON THE SPOT” gave the impression that any struggling Angeleno could show up and potentially walk away with a place to live.
That wasn’t the case.
LAHSA, established in 1993, coordinates services for people experiencing homelessness throughout Los Angeles. Its case managers work with clients to navigate housing options and access services aimed at helping them achieve independence.
The Mayfair Hotel itself was purchased by the city in August 2023 under Mayor Karen Bass’ homelessness initiative, which touted the acquisition as a way to provide “desperately needed permanent interim housing infrastructure” and expand the city’s interim housing capacity.
