49ers divorce may lead to daunting NFL future for Brandon Aiyuk, says insider
Brandon Aiyuk took the first step in the divorce process with the 49ers.
The estranged wide receiver arrived to the team facility Friday with his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, to begin the discussion process with 49ers officials.
Aiyuk appeared to be in good spirits after telling the media he’d met with “big bosses, big business.”
The 28-year-old owes the 49ers roughly $13 million in bonus forfeiture money, which was likely a topic of discussion between both parties Friday. But even if things get settled between San Francisco and Aiyuk, the wide receiver’s market doesn’t look promising.
According to NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, Aiyuk has limited options once he is released by the 49ers.
“The market is, at very best, a minimum salary somewhere or a tryout or a practice squad spot,” Fowler said during an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show.
Thus far, the meeting between Aiyuk and the 49ers has gone nowhere as Rosenhaus shared there was “nothing to report.” However, a decision regarding the Arizona State product’s release needs to be made by Tuesday ahead of the NFL trade deadline.
The clock is ticking for Aiyuk and his handling of the situation with the 49ers has likely given pause to other NFL teams in welcoming the receiver.
