He’s baaaack! Myles Garrett wreaks havoc as Rams win third straight, climb above .500

LANDOVER, Md. — The Los Angeles Rams are officially back from the dead, and they have Myles Garrett to thank for helping resurrect their season.

It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t easy, and for three quarters Sunday afternoon at Northwest Stadium, it certainly wasn’t convincing. But the Rams found a way to win another football game, defeating the Washington Commanders 20-13 for their third consecutive victory and climbing above .500 for the first time this season.

For a team that was left for dead two weeks ago, the Rams suddenly have a pulse, a winning record and legitimate aspirations of making the playoffs.

And their two-time reigning Defensive Player of the Year is back to terrorizing opposing quarterbacks again.

Garrett, making his first appearance since suffering a knee injury in the season opener in Australia, delivered the kind of performance the Rams envisioned when they acquired him this offseason. The superstar pass rusher recorded three sacks, forced a fumble and reminded the rest of the NFL why he’s one of the most feared defensive players on the planet.

His return couldn’t have come at a better time.

The Rams (5-4) entered Sunday riding their first two-game winning streak of the season, but their offense looked like it had forgotten how to play football during a miserable first half.

Matthew Stafford struggled to find his rhythm, receivers dropped catchable passes and the Rams couldn’t convert a third down to save their lives.

Washington (2-5-1) capitalized on those mistakes, taking a 10-3 lead early in the second quarter when former Rams receiver Van Jefferson caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Jayden Daniels against Emmanuel Forbes Jr., a former Washington first-round pick.

The Rams’ offense was going nowhere fast until Garrett provided the spark they desperately needed.

Late in the second quarter, Garrett exploded off the edge, stripped Daniels and watched linebacker Omar Speights recover the football. It was Garrett’s first sack in a Rams uniform and Daniels’ first turnover of the season.

Los Angeles couldn’t capitalize with a touchdown, but Brandon McManus connected on his second field goal of the afternoon to trim Washington’s lead to 10-6 at halftime.

The Rams finished the first half with a pedestrian 149 yards of offense, going an embarrassing 0-for-7 on third down. Somehow, they were a perfect 3-for-3 on fourth down, keeping several otherwise lifeless possessions alive.

Sean McVay finally found something that worked after halftime.

Turning to Blake Corum and a hurry-up offense, the Rams marched 69 yards in eight plays, with Corum accounting for 30 rushing yards before punching in a 2-yard touchdown to give Los Angeles its first lead, 13-10.

Corum finished with 58 rushing yards and one touchdown.

But Stafford nearly gave the game away midway through the third quarter.

Facing third-and-15, the veteran quarterback forced a pass toward Puka Nacua despite double coverage. Washington safety Nick Cross jumped underneath the route for an easy interception, Stafford’s ninth of the season — already one more than he threw during the entire 2025 campaign.

Washington converted the turnover into a 41-yard field goal, tying the game at 13.

With the game hanging in the balance, Stafford finally found his favorite receiver when it mattered most.

After failing to convert their first nine third-down opportunities, the Rams somehow converted three on the same fourth-quarter possession.

The drive culminated with Nacua making a spectacular contested touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone, wrestling the football away from a defender to give Los Angeles a 20-13 lead.

It was the kind of catch that separates good receivers from great ones, and Nacua continues to prove he belongs among the NFL’s elite.

Stafford finished 26-of-43 passing for 228 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Nacua caught 14 passes for 150 yards and one touchdown.

The Rams needed their defense to finish the job, and with Garrett back wreaking havoc in the trenches, Los Angeles had exactly the weapon it needed.

Two weeks ago, the Rams were 2-4, buried in the NFC West standings and watching their Super Bowl dreams slip away.

Three victories later, they’re suddenly looking like contenders again.

What it means

The Rams have officially turned their season around, improving to 5-4 and moving above .500 for the first time this year.

More importantly, Garrett’s return gives Los Angeles another game-changing weapon on a defense that has carried the team during its winning streak. With cornerback Trent McDuffie potentially returning next week, the Rams could be getting healthier at precisely the right time.

Turning point

After opening the game 0-for-9 on third down, the Rams converted three third downs on their decisive fourth-quarter possession.

Stafford capped the drive with a spectacular touchdown pass to Nacua, breaking a 13-13 tie and giving Los Angeles a 20-13 advantage.

Did you see that?

He’s baaaack.

Garrett announced his return in spectacular fashion, stripping Daniels for his first sack as a Ram before Speights recovered the fumble.

It was Daniels’ first turnover of the season and a reminder of why Los Angeles invested so heavily in Garrett.

Three sacks and a forced fumble? Not bad for a comeback.

Up next

The Rams travel to Arizona next Sunday for a revenge game against former offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur and the Cardinals, who stunned Los Angeles 18-16 in Week 6.

That embarrassing defeat sent the Rams spiraling to 2-4 and sparked serious questions about McVay’s ability to turn the season around.

Now riding a three-game winning streak, the Rams will have an opportunity to avenge that loss and continue their climb up the NFC West standings.

Game recap will be here.
