Pickleball player allegedly jolted into air by electrified fence at Olympic Training Center sues city

A Chula Vista woman is suing the city after a pickleball game allegedly turned into a high-voltage nightmare.
Renee Love was allegedly knocked unconscious after leaning against a fence that was carrying more than 100 volts of electricity. Love said she leaned against a black chain-link fence to her breath on the sidelines of the Better at Pickleball courts at the Chula Vista Elite Athletic Training Center on August 19, 2025, according to a report from the Times of San Diego.
Unfortunately for Love, an alleged botched wiring job from a nearby light pole had turned the metal fence into a live electrical wire, according to the lawsuit reported by The Times. When Love touched the wire a shock allegedly ripped through her body, launching her onto the pavement, according to the report.
The brutal jolt caused severe injuries to Love’s head, back, and nervous system, the court documents stated.
“Based on our investigation, this was not a danger that came out of nowhere,” Brian Mason, Love’s attorney, told the Times. “The responsible parties have an obligation to act immediately, whether that means closing the courts, warning patrons, shutting off the power, or making repairs.”
Renee has sued the City of Chula Vista, Better at Pickleball, Elite Athletic Services, and Brandon Sieh. The lawsuit accuses them of gross negligence and premises liability, alleging they did not shut down the facility even after becoming aware of the danger.
“Defendants failed to close the courts, failed to barricade or restrict access to the fence, failed to disconnect or shut off the dangerous electrical source, failed to authorize timely repairs, and failed to warn Plaintiff and other patrons of the danger,” the lawsuit read, reported the news outlet.
Mason blamed the sports facility for putting Love through a horrible incident. “This lawsuit seeks to ensure that the people and entities responsible are held accountable,” he told the Times.
