‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed’ Ending Explained: Does Paula Win The Custody Battle? And What’s Season 1’s Big Cliffhanger?

When the end credits roll on Season 1 of David J. Rosen’s hit Apple TV series Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, fans of the dark comedic thriller will be just as jaw-dropped as our protagonist Paula (Tatiana Maslany).

Before Season 1’s penultimate episode wrapped, Paula finally started to piece together the perplexing puzzle of the much larger criminal organization responsible for ruining her life. With help from Rudy (Charlie Hall) and Geri (Kiarra Hamagami Goldberg), she realized that Dennis (Murray Bartlett) was simply a middle man, and that Blake Vanderwalle — the kid who Dennis blackmailed that lady into admitting to Yale — was the son of Cecilia Vanderwalle (Nina Arianda), Senior Vice President of The Souter Group, a global risk advisement firm with ties to a lot of the clients that Trevor (Brandon Flynn) targeted.

During one of her intense research sessions, Paula learned that The Souter Group was holding a Corporate Leadership Retreat at a nearby golf club, so she hopped in her car to crash it in hopes of getting face time with Cecilia. Brian’s (Adam Huber) hitwoman Jennifer (Tala Ashe) tailed her there, and Detective Baxter (Jon Michael Hill) tailed Jennifer there. Before Episode 9 ended, a shot was fired, and viewers were left to wonder if Paula, Jennifer, or Baxter took a bullet. Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Episode 10, “Queens,” answers that question and more. But it also ends on another massive cliffhanger that will have viewers begging for a Season 2.

Who got shot? Does Paula win custody of Hazel (Nola Wallace)? Is she found guilty of murder? And how does Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Season 1 end? Decider’s Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Season 1 finale recap has answers. Just be warned, major spoilers lie ahead.

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Ending Explained: Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Episode 10 Recap, “Queens”

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed‘s Season 1 finale picks up right where we left off. Cecilia is on the green, whacking a golf ball, when Paula walks up and confirms she’s the SVP of the Sauter Group. “I know someone who works for you,” Paula says, cutting right to the chase. “Dennis O’Neill. We have a lot to talk about.”

So who the heck got shot?! As Brian, who’s standing off to the side, starts walking towards Paula and Cecilia, Maximum Pleasure cuts to a TikTok of Baxter’s rescue cat, Chester. When the video ends, we hear a cell phone on the forest floor start ringing as someone’s hand reaches down to pick up a bullet shell beside it. As Chester’s groomer leaves a voicemail saying he’s ready to get picked up, the camera pans to Baxter — who Jennifer shot — bleeding out in the woods. NOOO!

Back on the green, Brian and Cecilia swear a Dennis O’Neill doesn’t work at the office, which makes sense to Paula, because, “He blackmailed people into doing things that would directly benefit your clients.” When Brian goes to grab security, Paula breaks things down for Cecilia: “One of the guys that Dennis used to get the dirt got really greedy and pulled his own little blackmail scheme on me. Dennis killed him and his accomplice, and then I got arrested for both murders. Amagansett zoning laws, a bauxite mine, the patent for a pizza yeast that was owned by the Northeastern Food Group —”

Cecilia acknowledges the list that relates to Souter’s clientele, but claims, “We don’t break the law. We are in the truth business for our clients.” So Paula switches tactics and tries to appeal to her mother-to-mother. “Souter Group is totally untouchable, but you’re not. You have a son, Blake… You crossed the line when you got Dennis to bribe an admissions officer to get your son into Yale. And that I can prove. I can make your life very messy,” Paula says, noting that she might not go to jail “like that cute lady from Full House,” but her son would lose his Ivy spot. If Cecilia gets her fully exonerated, however, she won’t talk. “You said you’re in the truth business. How’s this for truth? You fucked with the wrong mom.” BOOM!

Maximum Pleasure cuts to a room with beeping medical machines and voices chatting about waking a gunshot wound patient. Surely we’re about to check in with Detective Baxter, right? Wrong! In true MPG fashion, the most unpredictable twist reveals the patient is……..wait for it……..DENNIS! After Paula shot him in the face, the Souter Group fixers presumably scooped him up and nursed him back to health. He’s still in rough shape, but a woman asks if he wants to try to get some fresh air. After she and a man help him into a wheelchair, the show finally checks in with Detective Baxter, unconscious at the hospital. As Detective Garcia (Dolly de Leon) waits by his bedside, she watches footage of Paula’s prison testimony to fake lawyer Jennifer, who’s still on her mission to kill. She cuts her hair, dyes it red, and gets a call from Brian, who offers to hook her up with a new ride to make her job easier. Though Dennis is off duty, he plays a crucial role in the plan as well. As his helpers wheel him outside for air, the man slips a piece of paper in the front pocket of Dennis’ shirt, which sounds alarm bells. Dennis clocks the move and tries to resist as the duo pushes him towards the edge of the building’s roof, but he’s not strong enough. They push him to his death, and he splatters on the sidewalk. RIP DENNIS, AGAIN! Why? They needed a fall guy!

The next morning, we hear Dennis’ voice narrate the contents of the suicide note he didn’t write. “I always dreamed of a life full of love and happiness. I guess the gods had other ideas. I, Dennis O’Neill, confess to the murders of my Jeff Throwald (Trevor) and Samuel Fraiser (Sky). They betrayed me, shattered me. I tried to live with memory of what I did, but ‘after such knowledge, what forgiveness?’ Maybe in the next life I’ll find happiness. Until then, goodbye.” Paula wakes up to learn she’s been completely exonerated, as requested. She makes a mad dash to the park to hug Hazel, and the two share a heartwarming reunion before Karl (Jake Johnson) and Mallory (Jessy Hodges) dampen the mood. Despite Paula’s innocence, they’re still moving forward with the custody hearing. So Paula spends the night with Hazel, then takes the stand to fight for her.

“It’s kind of like watching your lawn die: one day you notice a little bit of brown, and the next day it’s all dirt,” Paula tells the judge, recalling what it felt like when her husband fell in love with Mallory. Since their lawyer can’t use the recent murder charges against Paula anymore, he brings up the dismissed Portland case, implies that Paula was drinking and driving (surely a tip-off from Mal), and questions her relationship with a camboy. But like Cecilia, he fucked with the wrong mom.

“I’m the only mother in this room…When my marriage ended, it destroyed me. I was a wreck, but I had a kid, so I couldn’t be a wreck. I wasn’t gonna meet some guy at the farmer’s market or a book club. So I went online for some companionship. I could schedule that between school pickups and work deadlines. Do you think that was optimal? Do you think that was my life plan? It was fucking survival,” she says, stressing that she carried Hazel for nine months and they share an unbreakable bond.

After one heck of a monologue, and another powerful performance from Maslany, Karl’s lawyer replies, “That was beautiful, but love isn’t enough. Her life would be better with her father. I think we can all see that.” Karl and Mal are sure they’ve won, but in another twist, the judge says Paula’s done nothing to violate their original custody agreement and was a reliable mother despite turmoil, so Hazel will remain in New York. Another BOOM! Overwhelmed with relief, Paula throws another party, makes amends with the moms, and finally kisses Steve (Raymond Lee)!

While all seems right in her world, Paula isn’t out of the woods yet. Rudy notes that Dennis’ suicide is super suspicious, Detective Garcia warns her the saga isn’t over, and everyone is unaware that Jennifer’s on her way to kill Paula. In another twist, however, when Jennifer picks up the car that Brian arranged for her, he fatally shoots her, makes a call, and says, “All done, sunny skies ahead!”

Since the case seems closed, Rudy and Geri plan to part ways, with Rudy planning to become a paralegal after taking the LSATs. When the two leave the party early together, Geri bravely grabs Rudy’s hand and sparks fly. Rudy asks if they can go to a bar by his place, which flatters her, but he clarifies, “Not like that. Vi is coming by at 10.” A visibly crushed Geri drops his hand upon learning that he got back together with his ex, and when she heads to the office later that night, she says “fuck it!” and pushes forward with her harmful article about Paula’s camboy chaos.

Detective Baxter thankfully wakes up, but he and Garcia realize that the person who killed Jennifer still poses a major threat. While Paula’s definitely not out of the woods yet, she does get a deliciously cathartic moment with Karl, who begs her logistical help with Hazel now that he lost the case. “I think that I’m Hazel’s mom, not yours. And I think you should figure it out,” Paula says before feeding his own words back to him and triumphantly walking away. “I think you need to tighten your shit up, Karl.” (And the crowd goes wild!)

After Paula kisses Hazel goodnight and cleans up after the party, she grabs a beer and savors a moment of serenity on the couch — or she tries to at least. A NO CALLER ID number rings, and when she ignores the call, a text from a random email address arrives. It’s security footage of her driveway that fateful June 2024 night in Portland. The video shows her neighbor Caleb shouting, “Stop avoiding me! I’m not going away. Talk to me, or maybe I’ll start talking. I vouched for you; what are you fucking dumb?” In response, Paula screams, “I’m gonna fucking kill you,” and revs the engine. While the head injury that caused Caleb’s death may have been accidental, there’s no doubt that Paula intentionally hit and threatened to kill him. Yikes.

How did someone get that old footage so many months later?! No idea! But it proves they’ve got incredible power and access to resources. And they’re not done with Paula yet. “We own you. You’re gonna do us a favor,” the mysterious messager writes. Before the end credits roll, Paula’s phone rings again. And after Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed cuts to black, we hear her say, ” Hello?” AHHH!!!!
