Every episode of Apple TV‘s hit series, Silo, is a gripping, thought-provoking ride. But the final seconds of Season 3, Episode 4 deliver one of the show’s most jaw-dropping reveals yet.

Silo Season 3, Episode 4, “Whatever You Do, Don’t Go Home,” sees Congressman Daniel Keene (Ashley Zuckerman) and journalist Helen Drew (Jessica Henwick) continue their investigation in Before Times flashbacks. And in present-day Silo 18 scenes, Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) hides from Camille (Alexandria Riley) and makes a discovery that changes everything…

If you’re still reeling from Silo‘s incredible Season 3, Episode 4 twist — especially if you haven’t read the books and went in blind — you’ve come to the right place. So what the heck just happened? Who did Juliette find at the end of Silo Season 3, Episode 4?! Decider’s recap breaks down the adrenaline-pumping final moments with help from Silo star Tim Robbins.

Silo Season 3, Episode 4 Ending Explained: Who Does Juliette Find At The End Of Silo Season 3, Episode 4?

On a mission to evade Camille and regain her memories, Juliette asks Shirley (Remmie Milner) to take her to the digger void, the giant, cavernous silo bottom below mechanical where she and George (Ferdinand Kingsley) used to hang out. Though Walker (Harriet Walter) said she sealed the digger void off, Shirley takes Juliette down anyway, and in true Jules fashion, she finds a way to access the void. As the two are about to enter, they hear a noise in the tunnels, so Shirley sends Juliette in alone and goes to investigate.

With minutes to spare, Juliette explores the familiar location, but as she’s looking around the makeshift room George set up, she hears a faint cough behind a hanging sheet. When she says, “Hello?” no one responds. So she creeps towards the sheet, pulls it to the side, and reveals the one, the only, Bernard Holland!!!!! Robbins’ character utters just two words: “Hello, Juliette.” Then Silo fades to black as the show’s suspenseful score swells, leaving fans to wonder, “What the heck just happened?! And is that really Bernard?!”

Is Bernard Alive In Silo Season 3?!

First things first: YES! Bernard is still kicking! If you struggled to recognize the man in Episode 4’s final seconds, it’s because Bernard looks and sounds a lot different than he has the past two seasons. His hair is longer and unkempt, he’s not wearing his signature glasses, he’s in casual clothes, his voice is raspy, and he has burns all over his face from when he and Juliette were trapped in the fiery airlock in Season 2’s finale.

In Season 3’s premiere, Robert Sims (Common) told Juliette that Bernard didn’t survive the blaze, saying, “Flames melted holes in his suit, and the poison got in. We couldn’t take a chance with a farm burial… it took six porters six hours to get him down to the incinerator…I watched him burn.” Considering what a dangerous situation Juliette and Bernard found themselves in towards the end of Season 2’s finale, Bernard’s death was believable. But the story changed when Sims talked to his wife Camille and confirmed that he lied to Juliette about what really happened. Silo then flashed back to the aftermath of the tragedy and revealed that Bernard survived the blaze, only for Sims to smother him. Or at least that’s what Silo wanted us to think…

While we’ll have to wait until Season 3, Episode 5 to learn what really happened between Bernard and Sims, we can hear Robbins’ reactions to the big Bernard twist right now!

“I was told early on by Graham [Yost, creator] when I signed on to Season 1 that there was this surprise that happens in Season 3, and that I would have the opportunity to play a completely different Bernard, who has not only changed physically with the injuries he sustained from the end of Season 2, but he’s changed internally. His whole moral compass has shifted,” Robbins told DECIDER over Zoom.

In teasing what fans can expect from Bernard as Season 3 progresses, Robbins said, “He’s had revelations that make him realize that he’s been living a lie. What do you do? What happens when your whole worldview is shattered? What happens when you are in a position of power and doing questionably moral things for the greater good, and you realize, ‘Oh, that was a lie’? What happens to your soul when you realize you have done terrible things by being manipulated and the truth being manipulated? There’s a certain anger that goes along with that. I think he has an opportunity in this season to create redemption.”

As Robbins reflected on how fortunate he was to tap into a different side of this character he’s spent two seasons embodying, he shared why Bernard’s evolution was so powerful to him personally. “The idea that there’s a way to grow as a human being, even if you’ve done terrible things, I know this very well from the work I’ve done in prisons,” he shared. “Everyone is capable of redemption. Even if you’ve done terrible things, it’s really a matter of what you do from this point forward that matters.”

For anyone who wants to explore these ideas further, the Silo star suggested his 2019 documentary, 45 Seconds of Laughter, which he hopes will be available on Criterion this fall. “It’s about this idea that there is always hope that you can make amends for things you’ve done. You’re not going to get there, though, by being stubborn or not accepting the idea that everyone is fallible and that you may have made some mistakes,” he said. “It’s a great liberation to be able to say, ‘I was wrong.’”

When Silo returns and shows us more of Bernard’s redemption arc, we’ll also see more of the remarkable transformation Robbins underwent in Season 3. “There’s a lot of time to reflect when you have three and a half, four hours of makeup in the morning. But it’s about the entire body,” Robbins recalled. “It’s about the throat. It’s about the pain that you’re constantly in, that every time they say ‘action,’ you put yourself in a situation of imagining what it’s like to be constantly burning… and any touch is like an explosion.”

In the way that Ferguson had to completely alter the way she approached Juliette to portray her with memory loss, Season 3 challenged Robbins to reinvent Bernard, and he absolutely nails the incredibly layered performance.

“It’s a huge gift as an actor to be able to have that kind of physical awareness helping you make your character decisions, and the way that you speak, and what you say, and how you behave,” Robbins reflected.
