A New Jersey highway turned into a pigsty this week after 15 pigs escaped from a farm nearby.

The brazen hogs left their farm in Frankford and made a run for it — onto Route 565 in Sussex County.

New Jersey State Police troopers reported to the scene just after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning and managed to corral the strolling swine, who were “running at large, creating a hazard for motorists,” Wantage Township Animal Shelter reported on Facebook.

“It’s like ‘follow the leader.’ Once you get one, they just follow suit,” Wantage Township Administrator Michael Restel told NJ.com about the rescue effort.

Animal control, along with the owner of the farm, was then able to get the pigs back home to their pasture.

“I’m not really sure how they got out. Maybe through a damaged fence,” Restel told the outlet.

Although state law requires farms to secure livestock, the unidentified owner of the farm was not cited and no injuries were reported, according to NJ.com.

An hour after the harrowing hog ordeal, Wantage Township Animal Shelter, gave an update on the pigs’ status via Facebook.

“We understand that livestock can occasionally get loose, and our priority is protecting both the safety of our residents and the well-being of the animals. We’re happy to report that all of these piggies are safely back home,” it said.

Residents took to the comments section to thank officials for their diligence and add some levity to the situation.

“Did they cry weee weee weee all the way home?” one quipped.
