Russell Wilson wins first race as horse owner with big day at Saratoga: ‘Club Reign, baby’
Russell Wilson is officially a winning racehorse owner.
The Super Bowl champion’s first-ever starter, Club Reign, won by six lengths at Saratoga on Travers Day for Wilson’s Three Brand Racing.
“Club Reign, baby,” Wilson said as he celebrated next to his wife, Ciara, after the race, according to BloodHorse.
“Three Brand, Baby.”
“We’re all in, baby, with Three Brand Racing,” he continued. “This is exciting. It’s a huge win for Three Brand Racing. I’m excited for Club Reign, and our trainer, Whit Beckman, is a stud.”
Club Reign, a 2-year-old colt trained by Beckman and ridden by jockey Edgard Zayas, went off at 8-1 before pulling away to win comfortably.
Wilson was at Saratoga with Ciara and their children for the first start under the Three Brand Racing banner, which is connected to the former quarterback’s 3BRAND apparel company.
Wilson said his interest in horse racing grew in part from his brother, Harry, living in Louisville and his daughter Sienna’s love of horseback riding, eventually leading him to jump into ownership.
The 14-year NFL veteran knows a thing or two about winning on a big stage, having led the Seahawks to a Super Bowl title in 2014.
“Obviously, there’s nothing like holding that Lombardi Trophy in front of hundreds and hundreds of millions of people,” Wilson said, per Yahoo Sports. “To win on Travers Day, to win in Saratoga first race out, it feels like [winning] rookie of the year.”
After visiting the Jets and supposedly mulling an offer from another team this offseason, Wilson joined CBS as an analyst on its pregame show to start his TV career.
