What will be film distributors’ new “Obsession” at the Toronto Film Festival?

YouTuber Curry Barker‘s horror film was bought last year in Toronto for about $15 million and has shattered the record as the biggest film festival acquisition ever at the box office by minting $506 million worldwide. Buyers will show up in Toronto Sept. 10 primed to find their next big hit.

But what titles will shake up the market this year? One inside source calls this year’s lineup “a bit soft,” but emphasized that several films boasting A-list talent have landed on the radar major buyers.

Among those movies is “Everybody Wants to F–k Me,” starring Taron Egerton as a man who, as the title suggests, becomes the object of affection for every woman on earth. Since a trailer for the project was unveiled at CinemaCon, the film has become just as desirable as Egerton’s character.

Another high-profile flick drawing attention is “Prima Facie,” starring Cynthia Erivo as a barrister who defends clients accused of sexual assault, until her worldview is shattered when she becomes the victim of assault herself.

The stage play from which the film is adapted earned Jodie Comer the Olivier and Tony awards for her performances on the West End and Broadway – so an awards campaign for Erivo is likely for whoever picks up the title.

“I hear ‘The Julia Set’ is one of the most engaging and interesting films this year,” another insider tells us of the Chase Infiniti-led coming-of-age tale from first time feature filmmaker Niki Byrne.

Plot details for the film are being kept under wraps, but it follows Infiniti’s Julia as she descends into the cutthroat world of competitive mathematics. It features an all-star cast including “The Summer I Turned Pretty” breakout Christopher Briney, plus Gillian Anderson, Jason Isaacs, Nina Hoss and Chloe Bailey.

Director Byrne recently signed with Underground Management, which also reps “Obsession” filmmaker Barker. A source predicts that the film is “sure to be snatched up by the likes of Focus or Searchlight.”

Meanwhile, “Onwards and Sideways” stars Laura Linney and Rhys Ifans as a teacher and a composer both diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The project is already set for a theatrical release in the U.K. this fall, but will seek North American distribution at the fest. “It’s surprisingly funny, but very moving and heartbreaking at the same time,” a source says.

“Bucking Fastard” is double-dipping by playing both Torono and the Venice Film Festival.

From auteur Werner Herzog — and starring real-life sisters Kate and Rooney Mara — the film follows twins on a surreal journey to find a land where true love exists. “It has a killer cast, and I’m always interested in Werner Herzog,” one source says of the title, predicting it may get snapped up before it even bows at TIFF.

Adding to the intrigue, the fest is debuting “TIFF – The Market,” an expansion at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre featuring 650 market screening slots. The move mirrors other fests like Cannes where there’s deal-making outside of the festival competition.
