A lot of the success Cooper Kupp has had in his career is due to his late-night film sessions with his former Los Angeles Rams head coach, Sean McVay.

But even Kupp knows that McVay can take his studying a little too far.

Appearing as a guest on the “Games with Names,” hosted by former New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman, Kupp spoke about how his former coach would study his own film by rewatching the speeches that he would give to the team.

“I think that was a super important thing for him. He was my age when he was the head coach of the LA Rams,” Kupp said. “I can understand being critical and wanting to learn from all this. This is your first time leading a team meeting.”

“As players, we get an opportunity to watch ourselves and learn. I think he wanted to learn and be the best that he could be for us.”

The rumors of McVay studying his own speeches happened after former Rams offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth appeared on “3 & Out with John Middlekauff,” where he said he was impressed by McVay after seeing him study his own speeches as a first-year head coach.

The Rams changed the NFL coaching landscape when they took a gamble and hired McVay to be their next head coach at only 30-years old in 2017. After getting a taste of success early in his coaching career, the rest of the league followed the Rams philosophy as more teams started hiring younger coaches.

Kupp went on to say that McVay is very critical of himself and doesn’t want to let people down.

“I think that’s what drives a lot of things he does,” Kupp said. “He finds ways to motivate people and connect with them. I think he does a really good job of that.”

Kupp spent the first eight years of his career with the Rams, after he was drafted by the Rams as a third-round pick in 2017, during McVay’s first NFL Draft as a head coach.

The year, the Rams won Super Bowl 5., Kupp had a breakout season in the NFL, where he was crowned the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year, after having a triple-crown season where he had 1,947 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 145 receptions.
