China’s nuclear arsenal is vastly expanding under President Xi Jinping – despite his claimed desire to scale back the world’s doomsday weapons, according to a new report.

At least seven nuclear test and construction facilities have cropped up or been expanded in recent months, with vast networks of infrastructure and testing sites being built across the Chinese countryside, satellite imagery analyzed by the Daily Telegraph showed.

One location saw an entire town crop up around the nuclear facility – with apartment blocks, playing fields and a staff bus depot appearing near the nukes.

Another site now has a 2,000-foot tube believed to be used for testing how nuclear weapons withstand attacks from enemy weapons, while a third appeared to be studying the effects of a nuclear blast using high-tech lasers.

Entire villages and farming communities have been paved over to accommodate the construction of some of these facilities, the Telegraph reported.

And this is all despite Xi’s calls for nuclear non-proliferation initiatives, which include a “no first use” policy for the terrifying weapons and Chinese signatures on the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty calling for the ending of open-explosion tests.

Nevertheless, China’s nuclear arsenal has more than doubled since President Xi took office in 2012 – rising to 620 warheads as of last January.

The US, meanwhile, has about 5,300 warheads and Russia about 5,500 warheads.

And at the current rate of China’s arsenal expansion experts estimate they could have 1,500 by 2035, some of which are capable of soaring 9,300 miles – well within range to strike the US, according to the Telegraph.

China has a full nuclear trial — capable of launching nuclear-dipped missiles from the land, from submarines and from aircraft. It spent and estimated $12.4 billion on its nuclear forces in 2024, according to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. 

The Chinese expansions may be part of President Trump’s calls to expand the US arsenal last fall.

“Because of other countries’ testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis,” he wrote on Truth Social last October.

“That process will begin immediately,” he added at the time.

The alarming news comes just as Trump welcomed Xi to Washington DC for a three-day visit on Wednesday. Obserbers expect it to bring as much high-stakes negotiation behind scenes as pageantry for the cameras.
