‘Marshals’ Season 2, Episode 1 Kills [SPOILER] In Shocking Twist

Taylor Sheridan’s hit Yellowstone spinoff, Marshals, is back for its highly anticipated Season 2 premiere. And one episode in, there’s already been a major character death.

Marshals Season 2, Episode 1 spoilers ahead.

Curious who died in Marshals Season 2, Episode 1? Did Kayce (Luke Grimes) rescue Tate (Brecken Merrill) in Marshals? And did Kayce kill Tom Weaver? We’ve got answers.

Season 2, Episode 1, “All Hat No Cattle,” picked up right where Season 1’s finale left off. Thankfully, Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) and Belle (Arielle Kebbel) escaped their shootout, and Cruz (Ash Santos) didn’t head to her new job in D.C. Why? She was worried about Kayce, who acted anxious and guarded when she went to East Camp to say a final goodbye.

Little did Cruz know, Kayce had just been attacked in his own home… again! After Kayce and Tom Weaver’s (Chris Mulkey) daughter Dolly (Ellyn Jameson) returned from a horseback ride, Kayce found an attorney named Stan Cobb (David Alan Basche) waiting for him. The man told Kayce that Weaver was upping his offer for East Camp, because he “never takes no for an answer.” Naturally, that didn’t go over well!

Dolly said, “That’s absurd, the matter’s settled.” And Kacye declined the offer, again. But when the two headed inside, armed men attacked and held them at gunpoint. “I’d reconsider, Mr. Dutton, given your son’s future’s at stake,” Cobb said, threatening him with talk of a fishing accident. And just like that, Kayce said, “Tom wins. East Camp’s his; just give me my son back.” Kayce promised to sign the property over as long as he had proof that Tate was safe. Once Cobb video-chatted with Weaver and Kayce saw Tate was happily fishing, Kayce turned the tables, attacking Cobb and his men.

To Dolly’s credit, she seemed genuinely horrified and taken aback by the entire situation. But our boy has major trust issues, so he held her at gunpoint and questioned if her dad had her honeytrapping him this whole time.

“You’re scaring me,” Dolly told Kayce, assuring him that the father she knew wasn’t capable of anything like this. She agreed to help him get Tate back, but warned Kayce that if her father was starting a war, he wouldn’t go to Texas. Instead, he’d take Tate to his ranch in Big Horn, Wyoming, where he had “an army of his own.” (Sidenote: The change in location feels like an easy way to avoid letting down viewers who were hoping Kayce’s trip to Texas would result in a Dutton Ranch crossover. But here’s why we’re still hopeful that Grimes could appear in Dutton Ranch Season 2.)

With Dolly as leverage, Kayce called Weaver, and they agreed to exchange their kids safely at Weaver’s Wyoming ranch. Then? “It’s bottled up. We both walk away forever,” Kayce proposed, even refusing to tell his Marshals team. As Kayce and Dolly neared the ranch, however, he gave her his gun to hide in case of emergency, confident that she wouldn’t be searched for a weapon. Weaver holds up his end of the deal in that he arrives with no weapon, but after Kayce signs the ranch over, he calls armed men out of hiding and orders them to kill Kayce. At Kayce’s request, Dolly whips out his gun and holds it up to her father, but once he says, “Everything I’m doing is to protect you,” she hands the weapon over and tells Kayce, “You can’t unmake family.” (*SCREAMS!*)

Who Dies In Marshals Season 2, Episode 1?

Weaver holds the gun up to Kayce and pulls the trigger, but Kayce didn’t load the first bullet in case things went wrong. Though he manages to escape, one of Weaver’s men takes Tate to the water to drown him, and Weaver’s army puts up one hell of a fight. Thankfully, Kayce saves Tate, and the Marshals arrive via helicopter after figuring out their pals were in danger and Weaver needed the ranch for his Ponzi scheme.

They take out Weaver’s team, then corner Weaver and Dolly as they try to flee in a truck. When Kayce gives them the option to surrender, Dolly says, “It’s over, dad.” But the stubborn, selfish Weaver replies, “Everything’s a negotiation,” and speeds off. The Marshals shoot, Weaver drives into a boulder, and his vehicle rolls down a large hill. When Kayce reaches the truck, he finds Dolly dead. Weaver sobs and encourages Kayce to shoot him as “the vengeance [he] earned,” but Kayce lowers his gun and says, “Living with Dolly’s death is the punishment you deserve.”

If we thought Kayce had trust issues before, just imagine how hard it will be for him to let someone in now. But thankfully, before the end credits roll, Cruz shares some information that helps him put the betrayal into perspective a bit more: “I’m sorry about Dolly. I know opening up to her wasn’t easy. Tom says she was in the dark about everything. She brought the money in but had no clue where it was going.”

“Her only sin is being unable to break away from family,” Kayce replies. It’s a sin he knows all too well. But with his dad and the old Dutton drama in the rearview, here’s hoping Kayce’s new Marshals family will help him chart a brighter future.
