Week 5 is ripe for Jets and Aaron Glenn to flip the narrative

The Jets return to MetLife Stadium on Sunday in the midst of a three-game losing streak with their season on the brink of slipping away.

After a complete dud of a performance at Chicago last week, the Jets (1-3) spoke about having a sense of urgency to beat the Browns (3-1) on Sunday and get a much-needed win.

“That definitely plays into it. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t,” wide receiver Garrett Wilson said of the urgency for a win. “The reality of it is we have an AFC team, a team that we played, I feel like, every year since I’ve been in the league. We always know the stakes with this team. You know this part of the schedule that we’re going into. You can gain a lot of ground, you can lose a lot. So just knowing the stakes.

“A three-game losing streak, no one wants to endure that, but that’s where we’re at right now. It definitely kicks up the human aspect of we’ve got to get on the board. We’ve got to get on the board now.”

It seems impossible that the Jets could play worse than they did in the 23-12 loss to the Bears. The numbers from that game are staggering. None more than the play disparity of 89 plays for the Bears to 32 plays for the Jets. Chicago had more first downs (34) than the Jets had plays.

The Browns come to MetLife riding a three-game winning streak that has involved three straight fourth-quarter comebacks. First-year coach Todd Monken’s decision to name Deshaun Watson as his starting quarterback looks like a good one right now.

For the Jets, this is the beginning of a four-game stretch that feels like it will make or break their season. After the Browns, the Jets travel to the Patriots before home games with the Dolphins and Raiders. They need to go at least 2-2 in this stretch to prevent their season becoming more about mock drafts than actual games.

As bad as the Jets need this one overall, coach Aaron Glenn really needs it. He is 4-17 as the coach — the second-worst mark in franchise history, trailing only Rich Kotite, who was 3-18 on his way to a 4-28 record overall in 1995 and ’96.

Last week’s loss was an embarrassing one after a close loss in Detroit. Wilson said the Jets know what is at stake this week.

“Our urgency, our practice habits, the way we take the field on Sunday has to match the stakes,” Wilson said. “I definitely feel like this facility will respond to that. We all feel that. We all know what we’re chasing here. So it starts now.”

While Watson gets the headlines, the Browns defense has really been behind their turnaround. But they will be missing DTs Mason Graham and Mike Hall Jr. up front as they deal with injuries. Perhaps that can spark a Jets rushing attack that has been scuffling and will be without star running back Breece Hall for the second straight week.

One key to this game for the Jets is getting off to a faster start. They have only scored one touchdown in the first quarter this year, and that came on their first drive of the season at Tennessee. Since then, the offense has taken a while to get going, and last week it never did get going.

“That’s our main focus,” Wilson said of starting fast. “The first thing we can do is have a good week of practice, start fast in practice. Honestly, I feel like we’ve had good practices. It’s just about bringing it to Sunday, the things we talk about have to be evident. There has got to be an emphasis on that, an urgency. The things we practice at our walk through have to show up early because we do them well. I think that might carry us through early in the game. It is just kind of bottling up practice and doing the things we do well in practice early in the game. It’s definitely the main emphasis right now within this facility is how we start fast on offense.”
