49ers defense gets good injury news as door is left open for Nick Bosa to return against Falcons

The San Francisco 49ers defense is playing at a high level and is getting healthier.

Defensive end Nick Bosa wasn’t scheduled to practice on Wednesday, but could be later this week.

NBC Sports 49ers insider Matt Maiocco reported that head coach Kyle Shanahan has left the door open for a potential Bosa return when he said, “[He] can’t go today but hoping he’ll be out there tomorrow.”

The former 2022 NFL Defensive Player of the Year has been sidelined since September 24, when he suffered a calf injury during the team’s warm-up period of practice.

Because San Francisco already boasts a crowded injured reserve, Bosa was never placed on it.

On October 9. Maiocco reported that Bosa was expected to be healthy by Week 7’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Aside from Bosa potentially returning, San Francisco’s front seven on the defense will also get another key piece of their defense returning, as Dre Greenlaw was a full participant at practice.

Greenlaw was absent from Monday’s game against the Commanders due to a suspension he was facing from the NFL after he used his helmet to headbutt Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV with his helmet in Week 5.

According to Matt Lively from CBS Sports, Greenlaw’s fellow linebacker Fred Warner joked about him missing last week’s game by saying, “He had his own little bye week.”

While the 49ers defense got good news, the offense didn’t.

Eight-year veteran wide receiver Deebo Samuel didn’t practice on Wednesday, as he missed last week’s game due to a hamstring injury.

The biggest blow to the wide receiver position was Mike Evans, who left Monday’s game early with an Achilles injury.

Coming into the game, Evans missed all of practice last week and was questionable to play due to his Achilles already being hurt and dealing with a rib injury.

On Tuesday, NBC Sports Bay Area insider Jennifer Lee Chan reported that Evans’ Achilles tendon remained “intact” but San Francisco is preparing for him to miss next week’s game.
