University of Texas athletics to use AI lab to help decision-making — with a catch

The Texas Longhorns are dipping their toe into the world of AI.

Bevo Lab is a new sports intelligence platform and laboratory designed to help elevate athletic performance and expand learning opportunities for students, per UT Athletics and the Business of Sports Institute in the McCombs School of Business.

The lab will utilize AI-driven research and data analytics to help athletes and coaches make training and preparation more efficient and assist with recruiting. The lab will also allow for students to gain experience for careers in technology and sports analytics.

While the lab won’t be calling football plays, it should give Texas “a real chance to improve ourselves,” per Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte.

“With the help of our nationally ranked academic leaders and cutting-edge technology brand sponsors, Bevo Lab will become the global benchmark for innovation in sports AI and data analytics, making Texas Athletics the most data-driven program in the country,” Del Conte continued. “What starts here changes the world, and this vision will transform collegiate athletics. There is no bigger stage, no more powerful brand and no better time than now to lead in this new evolution of sports technology.”

Bevo Lab is named for the university’s live longhorn mascot, Bevo, who makes appearances at football games.

Innovations behind the Bevo Lab include the Bevo Lakehouse, a “unified data warehouse that consolidates previously siloed sports-specific data such as game film and wearable technology into a single platform,” alongside predictive AI models, visual language interfaces, and skills training for those in the next generation looking to build careers in sports technology and analytics.

Google will serve as the AI provider for the Lab, but Texas will also use its Cloud Platform and Gemini AI system to assist with sports knowledge instantly.
