Mamdani, pals use NYPD gym for late-night pickup basketball games

Hizzoner has hoop dreams.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani has been quietly playing pickup basketball with buddies at an NYPD gym in Queens, sources confirmed to The Post.

The mayor has shot hoops a half-dozen times at the Det. Steven D. McDonald Police Academy in College Point since sometime in July, sources said.

The mayor reportedly plays pickup ball in the training facility’s gym – which is located nearly 10 miles from Gracie Mansion –  playing with several unidentified associates, according to the sources.

As first reported by Politico, Mamdani began balling at the gym not long after the Knicks historic championship win over the summer – and around the time he attended a July 16 ceremony that rechristened the academy after hero Det. Steven McDonald, sources said.

The outlet reported that the mayor and his fellow ballplayers discreetly entered the facility through a loading dock around 10 p.m. or 11 p.m.

Sources also told Politico that the mayor’s late night games reportedly “scrambled academy operations on several occasions” – a characterization The Post’s sources disputed.

In a statement to The Post, Mamdani spokesperson Dora Pekec confirmed that Hizzoner has been “shooting hoops” at the facility, adding that staff were told playing ball wouldn’t disrupt training.

“The Mayor would never want to interfere with recruit activities, and if his use of the facility were to cause any disruption, he would find a different place to shoot hoops,” Pekec said.
