Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gets green light for shock Prem return – 'Deserves another chance'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not managed in the Premier League since leaving Manchester United in 2021 but he has been linked with the vacancy at Ipswich Town over recent days

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been told he ‘deserves another chance in the Premier League’ amid links with Ipswich Town.

Solskjaer, 53, has not managed a team in the English top-flight since his spell as United boss was brought to an end in 2021. He had a brief stint with Turkish giants Besiktas but was sacked after just seven months. But Solskjaer has now been linked with a Premier League return, this time with newly-promoted Ipswich.

The Tractor Boys are on the lookout for a new manager following Kieran McKenna’s exit. Solskjaer’s former United teammate Louis Saha believes that the Norwegian is ready for management once again.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserves another chance in the Premier League,” the Frenchman said via Casinolyze.

“He’s a top guy and I think he did a good job at Manchester United. Some periods were really good to watch, and others were difficult to manage with the personalities involved, because the foundation was unstable.

“Now, having a new start with a new club like Ipswich, I think he will have improved over the last three years. I think that’s exciting for him and for them.”

Should Solskjaer be appointed at Portman Road, it would see him claim his third Premier League job after spells with Cardiff City and United. He was also linked with another stint at Old Trafford earlier this year following Ruben Amorim’s sacking.

United chiefs held talks with the former striker but opted for Michael Carrick instead. Speaking in 2024, Solskjaer revealed that he would be open to yet another return.

“If the family [United] asks, I would say yes every day of the week,” Solskjaer said in a Q&A at the Oslo Business Forum. “It feels wrong to talk about jobs that other people have now, but I would say yes, of course.”

Solskjaer however has also expressed his desire to one day manage the Norwegian national team. He added: “I am a proud Norwegian, and of course if the question arises, when Stale decides to give up, I will happily engage in discussions. I am a proud Norwegian and proud of where I come from.”

Norway are currently in action at the World Cup and beat Iraq 4-1 in their opening game of the tournament. They will also take on Senegal and France as they attempt to reach the knockout stages in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
