Letitia James’ debate with Saritha Komatireddy couldn’t have been more revealing

Attorney General Letitia James was outwitted, outlawyered and simply outclassed by her electoral opponent Saritha Komartireddy in their Thursday night debate.

James — whose unimpressive legal career hardly qualified her to be state attorney general — reeled like a lightweight as seasoned criminal prosecutor Komartireddy threw lightening jabs and bruising blows that left James blinking into the cameras and wishing the one-sided scrap could wrap up early.

Hammered on her terrible record regarding violent crime, Medicaid fraud, sexual assault and serious mental illness, James relied on two reliable go-to answers: “That’s not my job” and, of course . . . “Trump.”

James made the preposterous argument that Komartireddy’s deep experience as a federal prosecutor of terrorists and as DEA chief of staff somehow disqualify her from the job of New York’s top cop because the AG is “focused on civil matters and not criminal matters.”

That’s a convenient out for a hack pol who prefers to use her office to pursue politicized national cases that promote the national Democratic Party agenda and her own political career, rather than to address matters that affect New Yorkers’ lives.

Muttering the word “Trump” has been key to James’ statewide career since 2018, when she vowed in her primary campaign to dig through the president’s canceled checks and petty cash accounts for something — anything! — to prosecute him for.

In classic Stalinist style — “give me the man and I will find the crime” — James tore through Trump’s old loan applications to claim that he had overestimated the value of his assets in borrowing money from Deutsche Bank, a transaction that was approved by the bank and made it money.

Indeed, she’s still trying to prosecute Trump, and in June she fired a prosecutor who complained about being forced to find insider-trading dirt on the president that didn’t exist.

“Tish was the boss,” fretted whistleblower Daniel Wiesenfeld, “and what Tish wanted, Tish got.”

James has turned her office into a sink of grandstanding and politicized prosecutions. Meanwhile, major crime in NYC is up a staggering 27% since James took office.

Letitia James has been worse than an empty suit.

Let’s hope voters tuned in to Thursday’s debate, because they’d have seen what fraud of an AG New York has — and what a real one could like.
